In 1994, Philippine male artist Martin Nievera, one of the Philippines’ most popular singers, released Roads. The album is dominated by middle-of-the-road love ballads, a style of music quite popular in the Philippines and a style at which Martin Nievera excels. Only one of the album’s ten songs is upbeat, the very nice “Alyssa’s Eyes,” but the material is distinctive enough so that the slow ballads do not sound redundant. Four songs were written by foreign composers, including a fine remake of Richard Marx’s “Till the Day You Said Goodbye.” There isn’t a bad song on the album. A standout track is “I’ll Be There for You,” a ballad composed by Martin Nievera and local respected music figure Louie Ocampo. The song contains a soothing melody, and Martin Nievera’s performance is smooth and pleasing as well. “The Road of Our Lives” is another standout track.
